There are 3 "Pillars of Truth" I consider to be helpful support structures after a painful break-up. Believing them will help you to stay positive as you begin to re-build your life. During times of weakness and self-doubt, these truths will remind you of who you are in Christ. Write them on index cards and put them on the mirror in your bathroom, tuck them in the visor of your car, put them on the monitor of your computer - keep them in the forefront of your mind, so you can lean on them when your strength gives way.
1. Your relationship has failed, but YOU are not a failure. Something that happens to you externally does not change who you are internally. It might temporarily alter how you feel. It might even affect your actions. It might change your words and even your outlook on life. But, it doesn't change your make-up. You are the righteousness of God, with access to the mind of Christ. You are seated at the right hand of Christ in Heavenly places. You are born and created for greatness and filled with the presence and the power of the Living God! You, my friend, are the light of the world. Those things have not and will not change because your relationship ended. Your relationship has failed, but you are not, by any stretch of the imagination, a failure. (Ref: Ro 3:22, 1Cor 2:16, Eph 2:6, Eph 3:19-20, Matt 5:14)

2. Your life is not over.Your life did not begin with your "ex" and it will not end with him, regardless of how you feel right now. You are tucked comfortably in Christ - He lives in you and you in Him! It is in Him that you live, move and have your being. The very air you breathe is because of Him! So, your life will not end until He is removed from it. (And here's the good news: that will never happen!) So, yes, your heart is hurting and that is cause for a pause, but that pause is temporary, my friend. You will live again. (And you will love again, too, if you allow yourself that blessing...) (Ref: Col 3:3, Acts 17:28)
3. How you respond matters. How you feel and how you respond are two different things entirely. Your understanding and acceptance of this truth will make all the difference in your healing process. When you interact with your "ex", mutual friends, in-laws and the children involved, keep this particular pillar of truth in mind: How you respond matters. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man (Col 4:6). And James 1:18 offers excellent advice: be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. It doesn't matter who was at fault, who or what caused the break-up, be sure to practice self-control. You are a child of God - and they will know you by your fruit (Matt 7:16-20). So, make good decisions and respond wisely.
These "Pillars of Truth" will hold you up throughout the healing process. They will keep you in the right frame of mind and prevent you from engaging in any negativity that may come with a failed relationship - i.e. anger, bitterness, blame, self-sabotage, self-doubt. Don't just read these pillars, believe them. They just might give you strength when you need it most!
